Celebrating the success of the people who transformed their lives with the help of “Strive2Thrive”
Strive 2 thrive is a brilliant program and I had the opportunity to participate in the pilot group.
What it meant to me was an opportunity not only to get back into some fitness but a program in a safe, non-confronting environment with people who knew what I had gone through and am still going through.
My cancer journey started 12 months ago, from being a fit person to being told I had this horrible cancer growing inside me. After two surgeries, chemotherapy then a mastectomy and reconstruction, going to a normal gym was the last thing on my mind. Just the thought of people staring at me and not feeling happy with my body image and everything I had gone through, regaining any fitness was again the last thing on my mind.
Karen White came up with this brilliant idea along with the Breast Care Nurses at both St John of God and Barwon Health to start the Strive 2 Thrive program. I was asked if I would like to participate. In saying yes, the first day I was as nervous as anything even though I knew the other women who were going had the same story as me.
To my new friends, and I will call them friends, because knowing what they have been through and how I have felt it has been easy to talk to them about anything. The guest speakers have made me realize that I am not alone, that the aches and pains and insecurities are quite common and it has made me realize that there is life after cancer.
If I had my time over again I would put up my hand in a flash to join this type of program not just for my physical health but for my mental health as well.
Thanks Karen, Barb and Sue for the most wonderful concept and I hope many more ladies and gentleman get the chance to experience what I have experienced.

We realize just how many difficulties you faced getting the Strive 2 Thrive program up and running, but we hope as your pilot group of 12 amazing women, we have done you proud and made all your hard work worth it. Ironically in creating a program to boost our fitness levels you have done far more than that.
I think all 12 of us would agree that the boost to our mental and spiritual fitness, although unable to be measured, has been greater in some ways than the leap in our physical fitness. Each and every one of us are indebted to this program for “giving us a leg up” again as we get back on the horse called “life”.
We are so thankful to you and the team who put this amazing program together, and hope that many others throughout the years get to share the same amazing opportunity we have all been given these previous 12 weeks.

It is often said that good things can evolve from bad, and so it is with this chance given to us by Dr Karen White and the S2 team.
I believe Strive2Thrive is the most wonderful opportunity to be presented to cancer patients following a trying period in their lives, where so much happens and many changes occur in such a short time – some of which are immediately obvious and others that simply creep up on you (.e.g, physical, emotional, relationship and social changes).
The S2T program certainly helps restores self-belief, and builds up confidence in the physical and personal sense. Sharing similar experiences with other people who understand is so liberating – expressing concerns in a safe, confidential, friendly and supportive environment.
The positivity of people in our group was so infectious – we seemed to strike up a bond very quickly and these new friendships really helped me in the emotional/self-confidence healing process.
The program is very well balanced, building on positive things to aid our future health, with exercise and all the other cancer related educational and health tips offering such a positive step in our future wellbeing.
In short I have been happy, feel lucky and have enjoyed my involvement the program. Strive2Thrive has has given me optimism for my future.
